Award-Winning Contemporary Retreat in the Heart of Istria
Nestled within a peaceful oak forest near the Church of St. Foška, this award-winning stone house is a contemporary interpretation of traditional Istrian architecture. Originally a modest rural structure, it has been thoughtfully transformed into a refined holiday retreat that celebrates simplicity, craftsmanship, and sustainability.
Winner of the BIG SEE Architecture Award 2022, the project preserves the authenticity of the original stone walls while introducing clean architectural lines, carefully selected natural materials, and modern living comfort.
Designed Around Nature
The house is surrounded by mature trees, creating a private oasis where architecture and landscape merge seamlessly. Large openings frame the surrounding greenery, allowing natural light to define the interior throughout the day while maintaining a strong connection with the outdoors.
Outside, spacious gravel terraces, shaded seating areas, and handcrafted stone walls invite guests to slow down and enjoy the peaceful rhythm of nature.

Minimalism with Warmth
Every detail has been designed with intention. Exposed concrete ceilings, natural lime plaster, solid wood furniture, and locally sourced stone create an understated yet inviting atmosphere.
The open-plan ground floor combines a fully equipped kitchen, dining area, and living space, while the upper level offers a tranquil bedroom beneath the restored traditional roof structure. The compact layout maximizes functionality without compromising comfort.
Sustainable by Design
Sustainability is an integral part of the project rather than an afterthought.
The house features:
- Solar power generation
- Carefully restored original stone structure
- Locally sourced natural materials
- Energy-efficient design
- Passive cooling through natural ventilation and shading
- Minimal environmental impact
The result is a home that respects its surroundings while offering modern comfort throughout the year.
An Authentic Istrian Experience
Whether enjoying a quiet morning coffee beneath the trees, preparing local produce in the minimalist kitchen, or relaxing under the stars on the spacious terrace, Sv. Foska House offers a unique experience where architecture enhances the beauty of everyday life.
Far from crowds yet close to the Adriatic coast, it is an ideal retreat for guests seeking privacy, design, and a genuine connection with the Istrian landscape.
